Hosted by the Buffett Institute’s Race, Caste and Colorism Global Working Group, visiting scholar and artist-in-residence S. Anand is an Indian author, publisher and journalist. He co-founded Navayana Publishing, anindependent anti-caste publishing house based in Delhi, India. He is also a performer of Hindustani classical music, infusing the form with anti-caste lyrics drawn from the teachings of Buddha and the poetry of Kabir.
At this event on Wednesday, May 8 at 4:30 p.m. at the Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts (Room 225) in Evanston, S. Anand will give a lecture and demonstration on Dhrupad music, the oldest surviving classical style of Hindustani (or North Indian) vocal music. Today, it denotes both a form of poetry and a style of music in which the poetry is sung.
