Description:

You are invited to join Port 105-8 students in a reception celebrating their work as part of the first Portuguese First-Year Writing Seminar at Northwestern University. The event will be Monday, May 13 at 5:30 pm in the Book Nook, located on the first floor of the University Library. Students have prepared e-posters commemorating the accomplishments and contributions of Afro-Brazilian authors, historical figures, and cultural icons who have used their voices to stand up and fight against racism in their lives and work. The date of the event is a significant one. May 13 is the day that the Lei Áurea or “Golden Law” officially abolished slavery in Brazil in 1888. However, the struggle for Black liberation continues to this day. Afro-Brazilian arts and literature depict and are themselves a part of this struggle for equal rights, respect, and representation. Please join students in celebrating Afro-Brazilian literary and historical figures on this important day of reflection. Refreshments will be provided during the reception and all are welcome.
