“Exploring the Relationship between Positive Psychological Well-being and Cardiovascular Health in Underserved Populations ”
Presented by:
Rosalba Hernandez, PhD
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Preventive Medicine
Abstract: The field of psychology has historically focused on psychological ill-being and pathology, e.g., depressive symptoms, but a paradigm shift has occurred whereby interest has been shifted to psychological well-being and the related constructs of optimism, happiness, and resilience. In this presentation, using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), Dr. Hernandez will share research finding on the association between optimism and cardiovascular health, particularly as it pertains to Hispanics/Latinos. She will then describe a current pilot study that aims to conceptualize psychological well-being in low-income Hispanics/Latinos with the purpose of developing a 12-week positive psychology intervention to improve cardiovascular health.
