Cardiovascular Disease in Liver Transplantation: Lessons from an Aspiring “Hepatocardioepidemiologist”

Presented by:

Lisa VanWagner, MD, MS

Fellow, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Preventive Medicine and the

Northwestern University Transplant Outcomes Research Collaborative (NUTORC)

Liver transplantation is rapidly growing as a life-saving procedure for patients with end-stage liver disease.  Historically, prevalent cardiovascular disease has been considered a relative contraindication to transplant. Along with the general population, liver transplant candidates are aging with an increasing number of pcardiovascular comorbid conditions.  In addition, chronic liver disease per se may affect heart functions in the absence of overt cardiac disease.  Given the scarcity of available organs, liver transplant recipient selection and appropriate monitoring for and prevention of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality is of paramount importance.  In this 45-minute discussion, Dr. VanWagner will discuss her research, which is aimed at understanding the role of cardiovascular disease in liver transplantation in the modern transplant era.
