"Combating Sexual Violence in Cairo's Streets: On-the-ground Strategies of Action"
In 2012, groups of citizens started organizing intervention teams to combat the rising rates and increasing brutality of sexual assault against women in public places. The groups formed as the police failed to provide women with protection against sexual violence, particularly during large public gatherings such as political demonstrations and Eid celebrations. This talk presents preliminary findings from fieldwork conducted in Cairo this summer with five anti-harassment intervention groups. I will examine the ways in which the groups navigated their relationship with the police.
