It is well-known by now that women and minorities are underrepresented in philosophy, and that women have often felt marginalized within the profession. In 2014, we wanted to do something about it.

Modeling our proposal after other similiar groups at other universities (such as MIT), we wanted our project to go beyond our particular department and instead reach out to all women working in philosophy in the Chicagoland area. The idea was to contribue to the creation of a thriving and supportive intellectual community for women in the profession by providing the opportunity for women philosophers to present their work-in-progress and receive constructive feedback in an informal, inclusive, and collaborative environment. With the support of the Graduate School and the Philosophy Department at Northwestern, the Women in Philosophy Workshop was born.

We hope through this initiative to assist in the professional development of women philosophers while building a philosophical community across universities. For more information on joining or presenting in this group, please see Get Involved.

This group is made possible by TGS Community Building Grant from Northwestern University.
