The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program Research Workshop Series with Visiting Assistant Profesor in History, Forrest Hylton.
Description: This workshop will focus on empire, war, and authority in the Guajira peninsula during the 1760s and 1770s, situating Native insurgency and Spanish counterinsurgency in the context of the general crisis of sovereignty in the Age of Atlantic Revolutions. It will also explore the role of mixed-race peoples in the failed Spanish colonial project, as well as kinship, conflict, and competition among Guajiro leaders. It will emphasize Guajiro property relations, jurisprudence, and trade networks as constraints on Spanish imperialism.
