David Koussens is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Sherbrooke where he holds the Research Chair on Law, Religion and Secularism. He is the director of the Centre d'études du religieux contemporain. He published "L'épreuve de la neutralité. La laïcité française entre droits et discours" (Bruylant, 2015) and co-edited "Quand la burqa passe à l'Ouest. Enjeux éthiques, politiques et juridiques" (PU Rennes, 2014, with Olivier Roy) and "Trajectoires de la neutralité" (PU Montréal, 2014, with Valérie Amiraux).
His research offers a comparative analysis of social representations on secularism and the national legal arrangements regulating religious diversity. He also aims to explore various religious qualifications by social actors, political and religious, then to trace how these qualifications condition the participation and registration of religious groups in public space.
