Almanya - Willkommen in Deutschland (Almanya - Welcome in Germany) (2009)
Directed by Yasemin Samdereli. Comedy. German with English subtitles. 101 minutes.
"What am I really – German or Turkish?" Six-year old Cenk Yilmaz asks himself this question when his soccer buddies don't find him suitable to play on either the German or the Turkish team. To console him, his 22-year-old cousin Canan tells him the story of her grandfather Hüseyin, who came to Germany as a guest worker in the late sixties and later had his wife and children join him. A lot of time has passed since then and Germany has become a home to the family, although questions concerning the two cultures continue to arise and to pose challenges for the family. Delightful and moving story and a hugely successful and popular film.
