Title: Women’s Autonomy in Childbearing: The "Obligations" of Bridewealth Payments
Abstract: Bridewealth payment is fundamental to African marriage. Yet, limited empirical evidence exists of its significance for women's sexual and reproductive autonomy, in large part because of the paucity of data. Using secondary survey data from Uganda and original data collected in Southern Ghana, Francis Dodoo argues that bride wealth impacts women’s risk of sexually transmitted infection and their ability to make decisions about reproduction.
