The Critical Theory in the Global South project, an initiative of Northwestern's Critical Theory Cluster and the International Consortium of Critical Theory Programs, will host "Decolonizing Critical Theory (Epistemic Violences and Decolonial Aesthetics)," a workshop to be held at Northwestern University on November 30, December 1–3, 2018. This cross-disciplinary workshop, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation, will provide a context for discussion between scholars whose work is informed respectively by Latin America, Francophone, and/or South African literatures and contexts. We are expecting that some participants will foreground the role of aesthetics within decolonial projects, while others may engage questions of epistemic violence and decoloniality differently.
Confirmed speakers include Premesh Lalu (University of the Western Cape), Nadia Yala Kisukidi (Université Paris 8), Rocío Zambrana (University of Oregon), Juan Obarrio (Johns Hopkins), Nelson Maldonado-Torres (Rutgers), and María del Rosario Acosta López (DePaul).
Many of the workshop's sessions include texts to read in advance. Such reading is not required for attendance, but it will provide enriching background to the problems, themes, and figures under discussion. To receive these readings, please email David Johnson (DavidJohnson2013@u.northwestern.edu) and specify which of the workshop sessions you're interested in.
