Description:

The Colloquium on Ethnicity and Diaspora (CED) presents: "Carceral Aesthetics" a lecture by Nicole R. Fleetwood (Rutgers) moderated by Jennifer C. Nash (Northwestern).

The event will take place on Thursday, May 16th, 2019 at 5:15pm in McCormick Foundation Center 3127.

Fleetwood explores various aesthetic practices of incarcerated artists in U.S. prisons. Her presentation considers how furtive planning an collective tactics of appropriating items owned by the state and claiming state resources and spaces are maneuvered to make art. She focus on how artists mix and create color; aestheticize legal documents; and use their prison indexes to make art. Fleetwood calls these numerous and overlapping aesthetic and political practices “carceral aesthetics.”
