ABSTRACT: Much railroad photography emphasizes motive power, but that’s far from the whole story. Locomotives can be impressive, but there’s often lots of interest behind them, for both freight and passenger trains. This presentation takes a more in-depth look at trains in their entirety (although locomotives are not neglected completely!), including their interaction with the environment that they operate within, as well as the interaction of light and subject matter.

SPEAKER BIO:  George Hamlin has over forty-five years of experience in the commercial aviation and aerospace industries, including management positions with two airlines (TWA and Texas International), two airframe manufacturers (Lockheed-Georgia and Airbus North America), and has been active as a consultant in these fields since 1996, as President of Hamlin Transportation Consulting, based in Fairfax, Virginia. He also has spent many hours trackside observing and, since 1956, photographing railroads.

He is the author of six books (Auto-Train in Color; 70’s Style Passenger Trains around New York City; Chicago Railroad Scenes, Volume 2; and the three-volume Skyliners series of pictorial airline histories); numerous articles for both industry and general publications, and has made many presentations on transportation subjects, including one on a moving freight train. He also writes a semi-monthly blog for TRAINS magazine’s “Observation Tower.”

Mr. Hamlin received a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and a M.S. in Transportation from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois.
