Race, Nation, and Skin Lightening in the Philippines

Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and skincare advertisements in the Philippines, this talk traces the semiotics of skin lightening as it links to questions of race, class, nation, and modernity.

Angela Reyes is Professor in the English Department at Hunter College and Doctoral Faculty in the Anthropology Program at The Graduate Center, CUNY. 

Colonial Recall: Using Ethnography to Connect the Philippines’ Past and Present

In this talk, Padios will draw on her extensive fieldwork in outsourced customer service call centers in the Philippines to discuss how the history of U.S. colonialism is remembered and revised by Filipino workers, industry leaders, and state actors.

Jan Maghinay Padios is Associate Professor of American Studies and Affiliate Faculty in the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Maryland, College Park.
