Alan Pierson and Ben Bolter, conductors; Oscar Bettison, guest composer
For its second winter concert, the Contemporary Music Ensemble performs two chamber works. Completed in 1906, Arnold Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 in E Major represented a major step in his development as a composer, bridging the gap between the traditional and the modern. Oscar Bettison’s fantastical 2012 chamber concerto Livre des Sauvages was inspired by a 19th-century book of pictographs of unknown origin; its three movements depict mysterious beasts, alchemy, ships laden with treasure, and other arcana. The concert is the culmination of Bettison’s visit to the Bienen School to coach the ensemble and composition students.
