Description:

The Department of Economics in conjunction with the Harvey Kapnick Center for Business Institutions present this special Lunch & Learn.

Our guest is Tim Schmidt, Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Discover Financial Services.

Tim Schmidt is Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Discover Financial Services, one of the largest U.S. banks and a payment services company with more than $100 billion of assets.  As Treasurer, Tim is responsible for managing the company’s balance sheet to support loan growth, expand consumer banking products and grow global network volume while executing strategies to maximize shareholder returns.  This entails managing Discover’s funding, capital, liquidity and interest rate risk, as well as its investment and derivatives portfolio and cash management activity.

Tim joined Discover in 2014 as Vice President and Assistant Treasurer, leading the company’s funding and capital markets activities.  Prior to becoming Treasurer in 2017, Tim served as head of Discover’s Investor Relations, managing the company’s relationships with institutional equity investors and Wall Street equity analysts.  Before joining Discover, he served as head of Liquidity and Capital in the Treasury group at SunTrust Bank in Atlanta, and as Senior Portfolio Director in the Investments and Capital Markets Division at Freddie Mac in Washington, D.C.  Tim began his career working at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City where he served five years in the Economic Research department, most recently as an associate economist.

Tim completed a bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University in 1990 and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan in 1992.  He earned his CFA Institute charter in 2001.
