Particpants

Nadine Naber is a Professor in the Gender and Women's Studies Program and the Global Asian Studies Program and holds an affiliation with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She is the co-principal investigator of the Diaspora Cluster, a member of the executive committee of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, and a member of the steering committee of the Social Justice Initiative. Nadine is the author of Arab America: Gender, Cultural Politics, and Activism (2012) and co-editor of the books Race and Arab Americans (2008), Arab and Arab American Feminisms (2010), and The Color of Violence (2006).

Junaid Rana is an anthropologist who writes about global capitalism, diaspora, racism, and social protest movements. He is an associate professor of Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with appointments in the Department of Anthropology, the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory. He is the author of Terrifying Muslims: Race and Labor in the South Asian Diaspora (2011), winner of the 2013 Association of Asian American Studies Book Award in the Social Sciences.

Elsadig Elsheikh is the Director of the Global Justice Program at the Othering & Belonging Institute, where he oversees the program’s projects on corporate power, food systems, forced migration, inclusiveness index, Islamophobia, and human rights mechanisms; and manages the Shahidi Project, and the Nile Project. Previously, Elsadig led the international program at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University, where he also served as an associate editor of the Institute’s journal, Race/Ethnicity: Multidisciplinary in Global Contexts.

Moderator

Marwan Kraidy is Dean of Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) and a professor of communication and the Anthony Shadid Chair in Global Media, Politics and Culture at Northwestern’s School of Communication. Kraidy’s research focuses on the relationships between culture and geopolitics, theories of identity and modernity, and global media systems and industries. He is the author of The Naked Blogger of Cairo: Creative Insurgency in the Arab World, an award-winning book that considers the resurgence of the body politic in the digital age, specifically during the Arab uprising of 2011.
