Survivors of sexual violence are disproportionately womxn. Approximately 1 in 5 experience sexual assault, and 1 in 3 experience intimate partner violence. Sexual assault among BIPOC womxn is disproportionately high and routinely goes underreported and unaddressed, meaning the cases that are tracked could be a severe underestimation of the reality. Gender stereotypes may factor into this violence. Even though health care providers have a fiduciary responsibility to care for their patients, questions remain regarding what opportunities exist to further protect survivors. How can providers better identify warning signs of sexual and intimate partner violence? How can providers help survivors in the aftermath of their traumatic experiences when they enter the health care system?
This discussion will focus on how health care can better address sexual violence and protect survivors from re-traumatization in the process.
