Design Stories

Academics can have plenty of opportunities for real-world, human-centered design. Michael Peshkin, professor of mechanical engineering and Allen K. and Johnnie Cordell Breed Senior Professor of Design, has pursued robotics research that has carried him into spin-off companies and deep dives into meat processing and automobile assembly, among other things. David Gatchell, director of the Manufacturing and Design Engineering (MaDE) program, guides students in client-driven engineering projects that stretch them beyond their skills from coursework. We'll talk about some of our experiences with teams and clients, what talents and engineering skills team members bring, what happened, and what went awry. Current MaDE students will be part of the audience, and they and all attendees are invited to interact.
