Ignacio Cruz will present on "Hiring in Context: Leveraging Expertise in Automated Hiring Decisions": I will provide findings from ongoing work within world of smart technology and hiring practices by examining how recruitment experts account for algorithmic tools when making initial screening decisions about potential job candidates. I draw from literature on organizational expertise and developing theories of human-AI interaction to understand how experts evaluate the meaning and value of AI-hiring tools in their day-to-day work. By employing in-depth interviews with recruitment experts, I empirically uncover organizational factors associated with how experts accept, reject, or modify the recommendations from algorithmic hiring tools through a performance called algorithmic expertise.

Nicholas Diakopoulos will present on "Computational News Discovery": Journalists are routinely challenged with monitoring vast information environments in order to identify what is newsworthy and of interest to report to a wider audience. In a process referred to as computational news discovery, alerts and leads based on data-driven algorithmic analysis can orient journalists’ attention to events, documents, or anomalous patterns in data that are more likely to be newsworthy. In this talk I will describe the development and evaluation of several computational news discovery tools that have been designed to enable journalists in domains of social, political, and investigative journalism. Findings offer insights into journalistic practices that are enabled and transformed by such news discovery tools, and suggest opportunities for improving designs to better support hybrid workflows.
