Becoming and being an entrepreneur is a remarkable experience and can be an amazingly satisfying, particularly in the Life Sciences, Healthcare and Medical Technology spaces. It is energizing to be able to drive change and improve outcomes in medical care with novel technologies, but it is rarely easy.
In this short hour, our guest Martha Sewall will provide a high level case study of the journey of one startup medtech company and expand on the unique requirements for FDA-regulated devices and software. There will be a Q&A following her talk.

Martha Sewall, EIR, Discovery Launch Pad, Office of Technology Commercialization at University of Minnesota
As an executive advisor and consultant, Martha pursues her interest in life sciences innovation, assessing and advising medical technology startups. She has been an executive in residence at the Discovery Launch Pad at the University of Minnesota since 2018. Over 4 years, the team has advised over In addition, she teaches the Medical Jump Start (and prior to that the Medical Value Proposition) workshops for Great Lakes I Corps and MIN-Corps respectively. She has been a reviewer for projects seeking funding from the PDIC (Pediatric Device Innovation Consortium). She has been a judge for MN Cup since 2017. Beyond the startup community, Martha is also a partner with a team providing executive coaching.
Martha’s 25 + years in medtech product development and global business management has encompassed a range of clinical care areas and therapies with extensive experience in the development of new medical technologies. Her business unit developed and launched innovative medical devices that have had leading market positions within their respective categories and contributed to significant growth for Smiths Medical.
Martha received her Bachelor of Science in Zoology at Duke University where she also played Division 1 Field Hockey. Since obtaining an MBA at the University of Minnesota, her career has spanned consumer package goods, bio tech and medical devices.
