Monday, October 24, 2022 | 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM CT

Derrick Gardner and Kevin Fort, conductors

Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers were considered the quintessential “hard bop” group, ushering in a new subgenre of jazz incorporating rhythm and blues, gospel, soul, and blues concepts as a counterpoint to the more frenetic bebop genre. The Jazz Messengers evolved into a proving ground for young talent, and having the group on one’s resume conveyed immediate bona fides. Composer, arranger, and pianist Tadd Dameron is known for such compositions as Our Delight, Good Bait, and Hot House. He arranged for such giants of the jazz world as Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sarah Vaughan. In this performance, the Jazz Small Ensembles focus on hard bop classics made famous by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, as well as Tadd Dameron favorites.

Cost: Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with valid ID.
