Description:

We invite you to the inaugural session of Translators' Adda, a public humanities initiative on translating South Asian literatures. Our first workshop, “Translating Caste”, will be held on Saturday, February 4 at 12:00pm at the Haymarket House.

Registration is required.  See below for link to EventBrite.

At Translators' Adda, we aim to create a space for appreciating the multilingual ethos of  South Asian cultures. An adda refers to a meeting; an exchange of ideas; a hangout spot where friends, strangers, and travelers chat over several cups of chai. Each Adda will comprise a craft workshop facilitated by a published translator, who will guide us through the joys and challenges of translating across languages.

“Translating Caste” will be facilitated by Nikhil Pandhi, winner of the 2022 PEN Presents Award. We will be working on Rajat Rani’s ‘Meenu’’s feminist short story, “Bhaichara” (Brotherhood) that sheds light on the vivid forms of casteism in an urban housing society. Participants will receive a copy of the texts (in Devanagari, Nastaliq, and audio format) before the workshop.

We invite you to come with your own attempts at translation or questions, observations, and curiosities for the guest translators. No prior knowledge of translation and South Asian languages is necessary for participation. For registration, please visit our EventBrite page; limited seating available. Lunch and chai will be catered by Thommy’s Toddy Shop.
