Michael Nylan teaches in the History Department of the University of California, Berkeley, where she holds the Jane K. Sather Chair of History. Her current work focuses on the theory and practices of the early empires (323 BC-AD 316), where she finds abundant evidence that the Ancients were "in better shape" than we in the modern world. At present, she teaches courses at the graduate and undergraduate level on conceptions of the body and body politic, on the environmental and environmental ethics, and on the local administration outside the capital, at the county-level. All these topics she teaches from both received and excavated texts.
This event is co-sponsored with the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities and with the Department of Political Science and Global Antiquities NU
