Prof. Edgar Gómez-Cruz (The University of Texas at Austin) will present "Vital Technologies: Towards a Latin American Theory of the Digital"

Abstract: Digital Technologies are now a normal part of daily life in Latin America, thanks in part to the mobile phone. Countries of the region are among the heaviest users of some, like social media. In this talk, I will share some meditations towards a Latin American theory of the digital. This theorization needs to be interdisciplinary, activist, and rooted in practices of the region. The meditations presented in this talk have been collectively forged and they are based on 20+ years of researching the digital world ethnographically.

Edgar Gómez Cruz is an Associate Professor at the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin. He has published widely on topics relating to digital culture, material visual practices and digital ethnography. His most recent book, in Spanish, is Vital Technologies. Thinking digital cultures from Latin America.
