Title : Dissecting How Urinary Catheterization Renders Patients Susceptible to an Infection and Septicemia
Speaker: Ana Flores-Mireles, PhD, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biological Sciences, University of Notre Dame
Topic:
Urinary catheterization is exceedingly common procedure in healthcare facilities and often leads to CAUTIs. CAUTIs remain prevalent and costly, increasing patient morbidity and mortality. CAUTI prevention and treatment faces major challenges and currently there is a lack of consensus on best practice for CAUTI treatment. Our research program is focusing to understand why a patient is susceptible to develop a CAUTI and identify host populations that are more susceptible to a bloodstream infection from a CAUTI. Using a comprehensive approach, we are dissecting the host response to urinary catheterization and host-pathogen interaction as well as developing novel urinary catheter coating to generate long lasting and effective CAUTI treatments.
