Description:

Identifying a novel target for a specific disease indication is an exciting discovery that may result in top journal publications.  However, the next step of identifying compounds that effectively bind and modulate the function of a target can be a challenging task requiring substantial funding, time, and resources.

Join Eric Schiffhauer, Director of Academic Outreach at Deerfield Management, who will walk through a framework of options at the earliest stage of drug discovery: hit identification. He will discuss considerations and new technologies that scientists can keep in mind when they embark on finding a small molecule that can be used as a tool to understand biology better and may ultimately become a drug that treats patients.  In his presentation, Eric will answer questions like: What type of assays are available for my target of interest? Should I consider an in silico virtual screen? What are the pros and cons of phenotypic screening? What molecule libraries are available?  What kind of library should be considered?  What are the types of university and external partners I can use to execute my screening plan?

SPEAKER BIO:
Eric Schiffhauer is a molecular and cell biologist with experience working on drug discovery projects in the rare disease and cancer spaces. His current work focuses on translating academic research into fully integrated drug discovery programs by helping to create a therapeutic hypothesis, asset positioning, and developing clinical and funding strategies.

Registration required and lunch will be provided
