Using Propensity Score Matching to Compare Long-term Health Impacts of HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis regimens
Abstract + objectives: HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an important tool towards ending the HIV epidemic. There are currently two oral once-daily regimens approved by the FDA for PrEP. While both have comparable effectiveness in preventing HIV, the comparative long-term safety of these two regimens have not been thoroughly examined. In this project, our team compared the long-term impacts of two oral PrEP regimens by analyzing electronic health records (EHR) from an integrated health system in California. Project 1 examined differences in incident risk of cardiometabolic conditions between the two PrEP regimens. (paper link) Project 2 assessed changes in renal function after switching from the older to the newer PrEP regimen (paper under review). By the end of the session, the participants should be able to:
1. Summarize current knowledge and gaps on long-term safety of oral HIV PrEP regimens
2. Identify common pitfalls in conducting comparative-effectiveness research with electronic healt
