LACS welcomes Dr. Harper Montgomery of Hunter College, Art and Art History. Related to her current research on the ascent of artesanía within contemporary art exhibitions during the 1970s and 80s in Latin America, Montgomery’s talk chronicles a lively debate generated by the Peruvian government’s decision to send artes populares to the region’s premiere international art venue—the São Paulo Biennial. Rivalry between cosmopolitan and local identities and Latin Americans’ defiance of developmentalism are some of the themes this episode brings into historical focus.
Lunch will be served at the event. The event will be in person, but also available online. To attend online, please register at bit.ly/LACS_1_16 .
