The notorious pesticide DDT was introduced in World War II, when it was hailed as a miracle drug and wonder chemical. Twenty-five years later the EPA banned it for its toxic effects. But in the 21st Century DDT made a series of surprising comebacks, proving that once banned, some forever chemicals can never truly go away.
Elena Conis is Professor of Journalism at the University of California-Berkeley and the author of How to Sell a Poison: The Rise, Fall, and Toxic Return of DDT; Vaccine Nation: America’s Changing Relationship with Immunization; and, with Aimee Medeiros and Sandra Eder, Pink and Blue: Gender, Culture and the Health of Children.
