Title: "Acetylcholine: An Endogenous Modulator of Descending Pain Control"
Abstract:
Although cholinergic agonists can relieve pain, the role of central cholinergic signaling in pain modulation has not been explored. We recently identified an endogenous cholinergic circuit that regulates sensory and affective components of acute and chronic pain. Activating brainstem cholinergic input to the ventrolateral periaqueductal grey exerts profound analgesia through alpha7 nAChRs - an effect that persists despite opioid tolerance.
