We will watch and discuss Majid Barzegar’s film Parviz, which tells the story of a fifty-year-old man who has lived with his father his entire life and never held a job due to social and economic issues in Iran. Parviz’s world changes dramatically when his father remarries, forcing him to move out. Barzegar vividly portrays a totalitarian society through Parviz’s character. Majid Barzegar has been a prominent figure in Iranian independent cinema since the 1979 Revolution. His films have premiered at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, San Sebastián, Rotterdam, IDFA, Karlovy Vary, and São Paulo. In 2023, Barzegar was sentenced to prison and banned from filmmaking in Iran for his involvement in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. This event will be held on November 7th at 10 AM in Louis Hall, Room 106, as part of Mehrnoosh Fetrat’s Cinematography class. It is sponsored by the RTVF and MENA departments at Northwestern University. The film is 1 hour and 47 minutes long, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker. Join us for this insightful event.
