In this virtual event, Dr. Ursula Moffitt (former NU post-doc and inaugural DevSci Diversity Discussion Series committee member!) will present a recent article entitled “Research as Resistance: Naming and Dismantling the Master Narrative of “Good” Science” on behalf of her co-authors Drs. Leonadra Onnie Rogers, Kate C McLean, and Moin Syed.
Their work "shows that although explicitly racist science (e.g., eugenics) has faded, the widely shared and strictly enforced epistemological norms about what is (and is not)“good” science remain entrenched." Not only will Dr. Moffitt share this historical perspective, she will also outline "three epistemic imperatives to resist this harmful master narrative: (a) embrace humanizing epistemologies, (b) listen and learn from those who have been systematically left out of science, and (c) recognize resistance as normative and necessary."
A rich discussion will follow Dr. Moffitt's presentation of the article and its contents and Q&A. Participants at all career stages are welcome – undergraduates, graduates, post-docs, staff, faculty, and more!
Ahead of this event, we encourage everyone to review the attached article.
We also encourage participants to submit questions using this form prior to the event. Questions submitted both ahead of time and during the event are highly encouraged so as to facilitate rich discussion with the invited speaker and attendees.
