COVID created a once-a-century public health crisis that has also led to a once-a-century public education crisis, one that has exacerbated long-standing disparities in student outcomes along race and class lines. In response, the US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona encouraged school districts around the country to prioritize their federal pandemic relief funding for high-dosage tutoring. In this presentation we summarize the evidence for why high-dosage tutoring is so promising, discuss why scaling the benefits of tutoring has been so challenging for districts, and present some candidate ideas – and initial evidence – on overcoming those scale challenges.
