"Rare Hebrew Books and Where to Find Them"
Wednesday, March 12th, 2025, 5:00 pm
Northwestern University Library, Forum Room
1970 Campus Drive, Evanston Campus
Hanna Seltzer, Director of the Hebrew Program, Associate Professor of Instruction, MENA Languages Program and The Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies
Jonathan Mazor, Weinberg '25
Please join us for a presentation on old and rare Hebrew books from the Northwestern Library. Through these books, dated from the early, mid and late 19th century, Hanna and Jonathan will speak about the revival and development of Modern Hebrew. They will examine books by writers from the Haskalah (enlightenment) era of the early to mid-19th century, as well as the Techiya (revival) period of the late 19th century, and will explain how Hebrew literature, combined with Zionist ideology, transformed Hebrew from an ancient, religious, and non-spoken language to a literary, secular, and modern one.
Co-sponsored with the Northwestern University Library
Free and open to the public - no reservations/registration required
