Derrick Gardner, conductor; Reggie Thomas, keyboards
Originally created as a cheaper alternative to church pipe organs, the Hammond organ was quickly adopted by jazz musicians including Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Bill Doggett, Milt Buckner, and Wild Bill Davis. They pioneered the instrument’s use in jazz, paving the way for its appearance in blues, rock, and soul. Joining the Jazz Orchestra for their celebration of the Hammond B-3 is guest keyboardist Reggie Thomas, a member of the Count Basie Orchestra and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra.
