Harvey Felder, conductor; Giang Vo, graduate assistant conductor; Seho Young, piano (Northwestern Concerto Competition winner)
The orchestra's performance opens with Marjorie Merryman's Windhover Fantasy, written in the wake of September 11, 2001 and inspired by images of flight. The Boston Herald praised its "heady sense of space and wonder... The overall sense is one of comfort and joy and spirit." Pianist and Northwestern Concerto Competition winner Seho Young joins the orchestra for Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54. Received warmly by critics in Schumann's time, the expressive, virtuosic work featured Clara Schumann as soloist for its 1845 premiere. Concluding the program is Franz Schubert's buoyant Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, often viewed as a homage to Mozart.
