Description:

HEFNU Emerging Scholars Program:

"Alternatives to Academia (“Alt-Ac”) in Holocaust Studies," featuring Dr. Susan Perlman (USHMM) and Dr. Ian Rich (Wiener Holocaust Library)

This online program is intended for graduate students with an interest in Holocaust studies.

This event aims to provide graduate students in Holocaust Studies with tools to navigate "alt-ac" (alternatives to academia) career paths, both in the United States and the United Kingdom. We invite you to join us as we explore opportunities for PhDs besides tenure-track professorships and including research and administrative positions.

Dr. Perlman is Program Officer with the Broadening Academia Initiative (BAI) at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She will be presenting the various resources that the BAI can offer Holocaust scholars outside of tenure-track career paths.

Dr. Ian Rich is a Senior International Tracing Service Archive Researcher at the Wiener Holocaust Library. He will be discussing examples of institutions in the UK where the skills, knowledge, and experience gained by completing a PhD in Holocaust Studies, are valued—including Dr. Rich’s own experiences working at the Wiener Holocaust Library as a Senior ITS Researcher.

The Emerging Scholars Program at the Holocaust Educational Foundation is designed to support graduate students and promote equity in the field of Holocaust Studies. This includes offering free and accessible programming on career development, as well as providing safe spaces for community building, networking opportunities and peer coaching amongst junior scholars.
