"What is Nazism? What is Fascism?"

Tuesday, May 20, 2025, 12 PM (Noon Eastern Time)

Please join moderator Avinoam Patt (New York University) in conversation with Doris Bergen (University of Toronto), Mary Fulbrook (University College London), and Paula Oppermann (Independent Scholar), for their critical discussion about European Fascism and German Nazism.

Recent years have seen the rise of far-right movements in various parts of the globe. This trend has elicited comparisons to historical manifestations of far-right administrations, especially fascism and the Hitler regime.

This roundtable discussion aims to explore the ideologies, practices, and policies of historical Nazism and fascism, as well as other “-isms.” While the discussion may reference current echoes of Fascism and Nazi, our aim is to help an engaged audience discern for themselves how apt and informative such comparisons are.
