Guest Lecture with Prof. Jennifer Selby, Memorial University of Newfoundland

Description: Drawing on thinking from Secular Sensibilities (UNC Press, 2025), Jennifer Selby (Memorial University of Newfoundland) considers the category of “religion” amidst contemporary French and Québec, Canada governments’ decidedly color-blind legislation and policies on secularism. She does so alongside longstanding ethnographic fieldwork that explores how these sensibilities are articulated among and upon individuals of Algerian origin living in a suburb of Paris and in Montréal, Québec.
