Description:

Karen Washinawatok, also known as Omāēqnomenēw Metāēmoh. Karen was born and lived most of her life in the Menominee homelands. She is a retired educator and board member of the Menominee Indian School District, and the former director of the Menominee Language and Culture Commission currently residing in Keshena, Wisconsin.
 
Karen is the cousin of the late Ada Deer, the first Menominee Tribe member to graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the first participant in the Elder-In-Residence Program that started on campus in 2018.
 
She has served as PI on a number of NSF grants in education (with Doug Medin and Megan Bang, et-al with lots of citations in NSF research around childhood learning.)
 
Served on the Menominee Tribal Council 2004-2006 and as Tribal Chair in 2005.
