Navigating Grief and Loss in Academic Spaces: Supporting Ourselves and Each Other

Grief and loss are universal experiences, yet they often remain unspoken in professional environments. This interactive session invites Northwestern faculty to explore the emotional impact of grief—whether personal, collective, or related to student and colleague experiences—and its intersection with academic life. Participants will gain insights into the grieving process, learn strategies for fostering compassionate spaces, and reflect on how institutions can better support faculty and staff through loss. The session will include guided discussion, evidence-based practices, and resources for ongoing support.

Facilitated by Dr. Jennifer L. Young, Feinberg School of Medicine
