Professor Ian Low will present his research “The Origin of Symmetry -- A Perspective from Quantum Information” in a talk aimed at undergraduate students (but for the entire departmental community!). Following the talk will be an informal Q&A session so you can learn more!
Abstract: Symmetry is one of the most powerful principles in physics. However, its existence is either given as an input or emergent as a collective behavior. Given the central role symmetry plays in nature, it is striking how little we understand about its origin.
On the other hand, J. A. Wheeler famously coined the phrase "It-from-bit," stipulating that all things physical are information-theoretic in its origin. I will discuss recent progress uncovering deep connections between symmetry and quantum entanglement. These findings suggest that symmetry may be the outgrowth of more fundamental principles rooted in quantum information.
