Title: The Public Sector Advantage: Short and Long-Run Impacts of Government Employment
Abstract: The public sector is a significant employer in the United States, particularly for workers of minority groups. This study analyzes whether public sector employment differentially impacts economic outcomes for families of Black workers and their children. Using decennial Censuses and job switchers design, I examine how employment in the public sector shapes household economic stability and intergenerational outcomes relative to private sector employment. The analysis highlights the continued importance of public sector employment as a source of economic opportunity and provides new evidence relevant to ongoing policy debates over government downsizing.
