Title: Snakes on a Plane
Abstract: We call two algebraic varieties that are "mostly the same" (in some precise sense) birational. One of the simplest ways two varieties can be birational is when one variety is the so-called "blow-up at a point" of the other variety. We'll explore these blow-ups in some very simple cases, with the hope to say something about the automorphisms of the field of complex rational functions (in 2 variables) and something about the classification of complex algebraic surfaces.
Note: The talk will start at 4:10 pm
