Professor Mauro Resmini, Associate Professor of Cinema & Media Studies and Italian at the University of Maryland, College Park, is joining us on Thursday, February 19th at 3:30 pm in Kresge 1515 to give a talk called Venomous Eye: For a Theory of Resentment.
Lecture description: "Caused by the perception of an offense, resentment is a form of visceral hostility that poisons the mind of an individual or a collectivity who faces an inability to react to the original injury. Because of this inability to either act or forget, the man of resentment is condemned to endlessly re-live the offense in his head and fantasize about the myriad ways in which he could exact revenge. To understand the seemingly ubiquitous presence of this affect in our contemporary historical moment, the talk will trace resentment’s concepual genealogy and then turn to cinema to investigate some of the ways in which resentment has been given form as a detonator for political conflict."
