Title: Sweet dreams are made of pipes

Abstract: I will give an introduction to the world of Schubert calculus, the combinatorics for calculating the cohomology ring structure of the flag variety Fl(n). For the slightly simpler Grassmannian Gr(k,n), this is done through the notion of Schur polynomials, which can be written as counts of semi-standard Young tableaux; the corresponding concept for the flag variety are Schubert polynomials, which are counts of diagrams called pipe dreams. I will explain how to construct both of these, and say how they are related to vertex models if time allows.

Note: The talk will start at 4:10 pm
