HEFNU Series: Holocaust Studies and Contemporary Issues
‘Race’, Whiteness, and Holocaust Refugees in the Colonial World
Tuesday, April 14, 2026, 9 AM PT/11 AM CT/12 PM ET
Work on Jewish refugees from Nazism has grown over the past two decades into a rich and varied body of scholarship. This roundtable positions the conversation about Holocaust refugees on a global canvas, asking what insight can be gained by more sustained thinking between and across geographical and cultural contexts. In particular, we will focus our attention on refugees’ encounters with colonial regimes in Africa, south Asia, and the Caribbean, asking to what extent their ambiguous ‘whiteness’ or Jewishness informed their engagement with racialized societies far from Europe.
