Title: Integrating Mental Health and Disaster Preparedness Interventions for Enhanced Household Resilience: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Flood-Affected Communities in Nigeria
Abstract: Flooding is a recurrent and devastating disaster in Nigeria, disproportionately affecting low-income communities and causing severe physical, economic, and mental health challenges. Yet, most disaster responses focus primarily on physical relief, with limited attention to psychological recovery and preparedness. This study examines whether integrating mental health support with disaster preparedness training can improve household resilience through a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to be implemented in flood-affected communities in Nigeria. By combining these two complementary interventions, the study introduces a novel approach to strengthening household resilience. Communities will be stratified based on flood exposure severity and randomly assigned to treatment conditions. The research addresses a critical gap at the intersection of mental health and disaster preparedness in Nigeria.
