Central Asia in the Soviet Union
The Intertwined Histories of Nation, Empire, & Revolution
Speaker: Adeeb Khalid Professor of History, Carleton College
This talk explores Central Asia’s shifting place within the Soviet Union across seven decades of rule. Bringing together questions of empire, nation-building, and revolution, Professor Khalid examines how Soviet power reshaped political identities, social structures, and intellectual life in the region.
The lecture offers a broad historical perspective while engaging with Central Asia’s connections to Iran, the Ottoman world, and anticolonial movements.
